Business Information Technology
This is based on my career of 30+ years, I have worked as a programmer, software development manager, software engineer, and then finally as an IT executive, and based on my experience, I will tell you both the good and the bad about being in business IT that
Let’s start and look at the advantages first
The number one benefit we look at is that being in the IT field pays very well.
Programmers,
Architects, DevOps,
Cloud Engineers, and IT Managers all get paid very well.
Programmers have an average salary of $105,000 per year, software engineers 138,000, and software engineering managers over $137,000 I should note that this is for the US and I got these stats from already .com
But you can get the idea that these are very good paying jobs so let’s go ahead and look at the next benefit which is the next benefit of being in IT specifically
Currently there is a shortage of people trained to work in the business Business Information Technology field
For example, if you look at cloud computing jobs, there are more than 50,000 cloud computing jobs available in the United States.
Today they are available from 3,700 employers
and represent 100 and 1,913 open positions worldwide today,
so I got this from Forbes,
and it doesn’t take long to look around
to see how many open positions there are in IT,
so this is a great time To get involved in this business because
high demand
Business Information Technology Industry Another great advantage is being in IT business mobility That is, you have mastered some
basic IT skills or perhaps a programming language or…
Cloud computing platform
It is very easy to move to another company
that uses the same hardware and software platform
so if you are stuck in a bad job if you are well trained
and have some experience it is very easy to move
to another company with similar type of technology
this is another benefit that you will not You might get stuck
in a dead end job if you have some skills you have the ability
to move to another company that might have
a better environment Many IT companies now support remote work
Thus you can work from home, this is a great feature and you can save a great deal of time and money, IT jobs are especially suitable for working from home, so the only thing you will likely need is a high speed internet connection and some kind of computing equipment so you can do your work remotely, but this is a huge advantage that will save you
Long arduous commute every day and trust me I am now working from home and I don’t miss commuting to work it’s a great opportunity and this is another big plus for many IT jobs
The last feature I’m going to talk about business knowledge since you might be involved in programming or perhaps support a system in terms of DevOps or operational support
You will be in a position to understand how the business operates, as many IT departments support mission critical systems that are really the core of how the company does business and this knowledge is very valuable and can lead to a promotion or other opportunity in the company
Since you can really gain this detailed business knowledge, you can really become the number one expert on how a lot of these business processes operate on a daily basis.
Let’s take a look at maybe they’re not very good, it looks pretty good so far, the salary is in high demand you can move around, you can work at home All great things, but like all good things there are also some disadvantages too,
Look at some of the potential drawbacks that a working IT business might be the first area I’m going to talk about limiting or perhaps a negative part of the business,
Our tight deadlines around IT projects can be critical to a company’s success.
Some projects may be driven by legislative
deadlines that can’t really be changed,
your industry may be regulated in some way
and may have a certain date when you have
to implement something by imposing Fines
or penalties for missing these kinds of deadlines
and all of these things can lead to a very high level
of stress, some people are better at dealing with
this than others Tight deadlines and focusing
on getting something out on time can lead to a great deal of stress,
Talking about something else that might be a limiting factor for you in Business Information Technology, another potential negative factor
IT business is the possibility of working hours that are too long to go along with those tight deadlines, it may be too many hours to meet those deadlines, especially when the project is over, and if you work in an IT support position, you will likely have to work long hours to fix Problems If there are any kinds of outages, most hardware and software upgrades also happen outside of business hours and often on weekends or holidays and at the same time as you don’t want to work, so if you’re not up for long hours, it’s It’s probably not a good job for you especially at the end of the projects you’ve worked on in startups and you’ve worked really long hours and spent the night working a few times so if there aren’t long hours for you then this is probably not the job for you,
Other things that are typical for a certain Business Information Technology environment, is another thing you should learn in IT
is how to deal with the change that the IT business is constantly changing and you will need to adapt to this change and the pace of change continues to increase, you will need continuous training to adapt to all this change, so certification languages are changing people who migrate to the cloud, all of this is a lot of New technology and you will need to constantly update your certifications throughout your career, which can be a challenge for many people at times, people have mastered one type of technology like mainframe yp e tech or became COBOL programmers years ago and they simply don’t want to change to the platforms new but that is inevitable in this business because things change very quickly so you have to keep up with that this is another thing to consider whether or not you are able to adapt to the change
I will talk about stress,
So working with mission-critical applications
is stressful work for many of these systems dealing
with large amounts of customers and a large amount
of money, so when these types of systems go down,
you will be called to work on those production problems
and tell their results, most of the time enjoying These systems
have a lot of clarity, so don’t be surprised if members
of the upper management are the CEO
He or she is involved in whatever is going
on with these system problems so if you don’t really like that kind
of exposure again that’s a limiting factor but a lot of times
when you’re working on these systems it’s a tightrope
with no network so it can be It is very difficult and stressful
in peak situations, especially if something is hacked
or a service or program is down for an extended period of time
Another area where all these limiting factors can lead to fatigue is,
So if you work long hours
and have long periods of extreme stress,
it can really lead to job burnout and really lead
to finding a secondary job or something he wants to move
into after twenty, twenty, thirty years and IT work,
so my advice to you is to develop some Secondary skills along
the way you can move on to a new career if you need to,
I’ve really enjoyed my career in Business Information Technology
but after 30 years I’ve moved more into the educational side of things
and more into the production side of supporting mission-critical systems
and I’m glad I did Both but I’m glad I developed some secondary skills
along the way, so I had the option of doing a few other things later on Mike when I wasn’t too fond of being under a steady amount of tuft,
To wrap this up, thank you very much for your interest in this article I hope it has given you a realistic look at what a career in IT might look like with some advantages and also realistically some disadvantages and hardships
It may be when you work long hours and a career in IT for me it has been a great job and I hope you have some excellent opportunities ahead of you in this business
